The Girl in the Pink Raincoat - Alrene Hughes

I have to say that I put off reading this book for a while as I wasn’t I would like it. I thought it would just be another generic girl meets boy in the war story. However I was wrong.

I actually really enjoyed this book, it was an easy read and I read 150 pages in one sitting. To think I wouldn’t enjoy this was a mistake. I haven’t read anything along these lines before. A factory worker, Gracie, seems to have a few of the boys after her. The one that takes her fancy is Jacob; however, Jacob is a German. Just when you pour all your hopes into them and are rooting for them to succeed, the war stars.

I really enjoyed meeting all these characters in this book, there was love, tension, friendship and some trial and tribulations. These all married well into one another, creating a gripping story that I was glad to have picked up and read. Gracie is the heart of the book, and you get behind her 100% in everything that she does. In a way it was refreshing to see another side of the war efforts in England and those who went through it. For me, I do like to learn about the war, and in this book I certainly did.

I was gripped by this book and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I don’t know why I had my reservations. This is one author I will be looking out for again. It was well researched and well written, providing the reader with information they may not have necessarily known before as well as providing such a beautiful story.

As it made contact with my ear, a siren rang in my brain, blocking all other sound. I kicked out, my foot slamming into his shins. His forward momentum increased as he was caught off balance, and his upper body folded. His shoulder glanced off the picture frame on the wall and it fell to the floor with a clatter. The rebound flung him away from me. As he let go of my arm, we fell apart like a tree struck down the middle by lightning. I staggered backwards, calves ramming against the coffee table, pushing it towards the sofa. Terror now ruling my fear, I grabbed the ceramic vase toppling from the table. I swung it ineffectually at his head. I was briefly su
